Išsiskiria dujos, kurios stumia iš vamzdžio sviedinius, kulkas, raketas ir t. t. Parako degimas sluoksniais leidžia reguliuoti dujų susidarymo greitį. Pagrindinės parako charakteristikos: degimo šiluma (Q); susidarančių dujų tūris (W) sudegus 1 kg parako; dujų temperatūra (T) tokiomis sąlygomis, kai parakas dega pastoviame tūryje be šiluminių nuostolių; parako tankis (δ); parako jėga (f – vieno kilogramo parako dujų darbas, atliekamas joms plečiantis nuo 0° iki degimo temeperatūros, esant 101,3 kPa slėgiui). Parakas būna nitroceliuliozinis, arba bedūmis (balistitinis, korditinis ir piroksilininis), ir dūminis (mišininis).
